WHY DO BELIEVERS FEAR ALLAH?
Harun Yahya

To understand why believers fear ALlah (swt) , it is very important to understand that fear of ALlah (swt) is a feeling which incites a believer's faith, eagerness, love and respect for ALlah (swt). This fear guards a person against adopting attitudes which ALlah (swt) does not approve, curbs the overflowing desires of the self and reigns in boundless evils. When experienced from a positive perspective, this fear gives constant rise to good actions and attitudes.

This fear distances the believer from ALlah's (swt) punishment, and draws him towards ALlah (swt) pleasure and mercy, which results in great spiritual satisfaction. It inspires in a believer the need to respect ALlah's (swt) boundaries, gives him an uncompromising determination in seeking ALlah's (swt) approval and a constant vigilance. Subsequently, the fear of a believer in this world will save him from the fear of the Last Day and the eternal fear and terror of Hell. A Qur'anic verse declares:
'Those who give away their wealth by night and day, secretly and openly, will have their reward with their Lord. They will have their reward with their Lord. They will feel no fear and will know no sorrow.' [Surah al-Baqara: 274]

Believers who fear ALlah's (swt) warnings and punishment and who adhere with absolute vigilance to His order and judgment will possess a superior morality, which ALlah (swt) approves of : modesty, tolerance, thoughtfulness, devotion, a pure intellect and a deep awareness of the surpassing excellence of ALlah's (swt) creation. Such people will display exemplary conduct and possess a high awareness and great sensibility. In essence, fear of ALlah (swt) spiritually enriches the believer. It increases their sight, and engenders a noble spiritual state enhanced by subtle intimations of divine wisdom; it is the key to eternal reward and happiness.

They fear ALlah's exalted rank

A believer who has an awareness of ALlah (swt) as described in the Qur'an and who sincerely reflects on His attributes will immediately begin to experience that inner awe that is due to ALlah's exalted rank and superiority. ALlah's  majesty, vastness and infinite power will create within the believer a fear full of absolute awe and amazement.

This fear is a natural fear, which grows in the heart of a believer who is conscious of ALlah's high and exalted rank. The levels of this fear will increased in proportion to the depth of a person's faith and capacity for reflection. This kind of fear is referred to in the Qur'an as hashyat (to fear with awe).

ALlah is the possessor of infinite strength, infinite knowledge and possesses infinite wisdom. He does what He wills when He wills. He will not be questioned about what He does, but He will question people about what they have done. Our Lord is rich beyond need of any being. However, all of creation is dependent on Him. Everybody and everything is created from nothing, and it is ALlah (swt) Who ensures their existence. He is the owner of everything and everybody. If He willed to do so, He could exterminate everyone and replace them with other creatures. He never forgets anything. If ALlah (swt) wishes for something to be, He merely says, "be" and it will be. Nothing can ever tire Him. For an intelligent person to adopt an attitude of indifference toward ALlah (swt) for even a moment would be out of the question, let alone taking up a rebellious stance against Him Whose superiority is infinite.

A person who recognizes ALlah (swt) as described in the Qur'an and who appreciates His strength will be overwhelmed with awe at His vastness and adopt the attitude of humility and caution that is due to Him. A believer who knows ALlah's greatness, majesty and strength is also aware of His other attributes such as "The Avenger" "The Compeller" "The Punisher" and "The Degrader." He will also know that any attitude or speech which is contrary to His commands will not be without response from Him. The believer will act in the knowledge that ALlah (swt) is at all times aware of everything, that He is all surrounding and all encompassing, and He is closer to him than his jugular vein.

As a result of the believer's sincerity, ALlah (swt) will reward him by His infinite Mercy with affirmation in this world, and in the Hereafter with Paradise;

'For those who fear the Station of their Lord there are two Gardens.' [Surat ar-Rahman: 46]

Most certainly, to appreciate ALlah (swt) as is due, it is necessary to possess a very good understanding of His Qur'anic signs (verses) as well as being able to recognize His signs in the physical world. From the tiniest atom or cell to the greatest stars or galaxies, possessing detailed knowledge in relation to ALlah's in relation to ALlah's creation increases a person's fear of Him. By being aware of these things one gains an even greater
appreciation of ALlah's infinite wisdom, power and knowledge as manifested in the intricacies of the countless things He has brought into existence, and one is also better able to grasp the utter uniqueness of His power to create. This in turn would serve as a means of increasing many times over the fear of ALlah (swt). Thus, ALlah (swt) reveals this secret in the Qur'an;

'...Only those of His servants with knowledge have fear of ALlah. ALlah is Almighty, Ever-Forgiving.' [Surah Fatir: 28]

They fear ALlah's warnings

In another verse ALlah (swt) advises the believers to fear His warnings as they would fear His exalted rank:

'...That is the reward of those who fear My station and fear My threat.' [Surah Ibrahim: 14]

ALlah (swt) has promised to those who do not believe in and obey Him, who never pay regard to what is pleasing to Him and who do not recognize His commands and prohibitions, an endless, spiritual and physical punishment. A true believer knows that no one in this world is safe from ALlah's punishment. It is because of this that he is fearful of being subjected to the intolerable and infinite punishment of Hell, which ALlah (swt) has promised to those who repudiate belief. The spiritual stater of the true believers is described in the Qur'an in the  following manner:

'[Believers are] those who affirm the Day of Judgment. Those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord. No one is safe from the punishment of his Lord.' [Surat al-Ma'arij: 26-28]

The souls of those believers who truly fear ALlah (swt) tremble on hearing recited those verses of Qur'an which refer to the Fire. On the other hand, those who refuse to believe cannot properly comprehend the meanings of the Book of ALlah, even if they do read it. Therefore, only true believers will perceive in these Qur'anic verses ALlah's warning to them of the torments of Hell. The only people who will pay heed to the Qur'an, fearing ALlah's punishment and act cautiously, are the true believers. As a result, they model themselves not on other people, but rather, on those God-fearing believers who are praised in the Qur'an, and the prophets.

These people do not grow arrogant or over confident, thinking to themselves, "these verses cannot possibly apply to me, since I am a believer." On the contrary, as a result of their faith, they will constantly hope for redemption and ALlah's mercy, as emphasized in the following verse:

'...they call on their Lord in fear and ardent hope.' [Surat as-Sajda: 16]

About this issue, Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

"When the heart of a believer is filled with these two feelings of hope and fear, Almighty ALlah fulfils his hope and saves him from what he fears." [Ibn Majah]

In order to protect people from Hell, ALlah's numerous warnings and reminders are to be found in the Qur'an. In the hope that the rejectors may become fearful and become cautious in their behaviors, they have been warned with the punishments they will face in the Hereafter. This is emphasized in the Qur'an:

....."The real losers are those who lose themselves and their families on the Day of Rising." Is not that clear loss? They will have awnings of Fire above them and awnings below them. By that ALlah strikes fear into His servants: "O My servants, fear Me!" [Surat az-Zumar: 15-16]

The reality is that ALlah (swt) has warned people, either through His verses or by the mediation of His prophets or even through particular incidents which occur as warning experiences. He will invite them and frighten them with His punishment.

"...We frighten them, but it only increases them in their excessive insolence." [Surah al-Isra': 60]

The verse clearly shows that for those who persistently reject ALlah's warning are of no benefit, rather they encourage them to greater outrageousness. When the time comes, the punishment they have denied will manifest as certain truth. ALlah (swt) declares in one of His verses:

'Woe to you, and woe! Then woe to you, and woe! Does man reckon he will be left to go unchecked? [Surah al-Qiyama: 34-36]

Those who distanced themselves from fear of ALlah (swt) during their time on Earth and denied ALlah's punishment, will be given their records in their left hand after they are called to account, at which time they will be judged accordingly and will be sentenced to infinite punishment and driven to Hell in groups. They will be in a state of total psychological collapse as they are dragged to the gates of Hell. ALlah (swt) describes the moment in His verses in the following manner:

'Those who do not believe will be driven to Hell in companies and when they arrive there and its gates are opened its custodians will say to them, "Did Messengers from yourselves not come to you, reciting your Lord's Signs to you and warning you of the meeting on this Day of yours?" They will say, "indeed they did, but the decree of punishment is justly carried out against the disbelievers." They will be told, "Enter the gates of Hell and stay there timelessly, for ever. How evil is the abode of the arrogant!"  [Surah az-Zumar: 71-72]

In this manner, they will enter through the gates of Hell to remain there forever. The gates of Hell will be drawn closed and locked. There will be no possibility of escape, and their bodies and souls will be subjected to infinite, unbearable pain. However, none of the punishments they will be subjected to will kill them. After each exposure to the Fire their scorched flesh will be renewed and the punishment will continue. They will long for the punishment to come to an end, but they will receive the following answer:

'They will call out {to the custodian of the Hell), "Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "You will stay the way you are."  [Surah az-Zukhruf: 77]

The punishment of Hell is of different types, each one of which is beyond human powers of imagination. The deviators will be firewood for Hellfire, they will be tormented by it. Their faces will be rolled over in the Fire, with hands tied they will be thrown into as narrow space in the fire where they will be boiled and branded.
Whilst in this state they will be scourged with cudgels made of iron, they will wear shirts of tar and will sleep on beds of fire covered with fire. They will eat bitter thorny bush and poisonous zaqqum and will drink blood and scalding pus. The boiling water they will be made to drink will lacerate their bowels, the Fire will sear their faces, their lips will be drawn back from their teeth, and they will sigh and gasp. All these are just one perspective on the physical punishments of Hell.

The people of Hell will also be subjected to the psychological equivalent of the pain they suffer physically. Simultaneously they will feel helplessness, hopelessness and remorse, and they will be subjected to degradation, disgrace, abasement, humiliation, anger, rage and quarrel. At the same time, the punishment inflicted upon them will devour, and destroy them.

Under this multiple onslaught of pain and suffering, each one of them will be alone as enemies one to another. They will constantly curse one another. Their insane screaming, bawling, begging, moaning and groaning will merge into a deafening howl.

It would be easy to imagine that those subjected to this punishment are creatures of another kind. However, this is not so, they are people who once inhabited the Earth who you may have seen walking along the street, some of whom you may recognize and know personally. Nothing has changed except that at a time they least expected, the angels of death have taken their souls and they have found themselves answering and paying for the sins they have committed. Amongst ALlah's creatures, it is only the true believers who are aware of ALlah's great warning and whose condition is one of fear and hope:

(The servants of the All-Merciful are) those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell, its punishment is inescapable pain." [Surah al-Furqan: 65]

They fear losing ALlah's approval and love

The true believer who possesses an intimate and profound love of ALlah (swt) knows very well that the most important nourishment for this love is again an intimate, profound fear which is full of respect. True believers, who have tasted the indescribable spiritual pleasures of loving ALlah (swt), are very afraid of committing any offence or error that might endanger that love or , worse still, arouse the displeasure or enmity of their Most Beloved, ALlah (swt).

Fear of ALlah (swt) is inextricably linked to love of ALlah (swt). Love of ALlah (swt) can only be achieved with nearness to ALlah, which becomes a reality when one develops an intimate and sincere attachment to Him. However, nearness to ALlah (swt) is not possible without His love and approval, and this is gained by protecting His boundaries and fulfilling His commands. This however, is not a position that can be arrived at without first establishing fear of ALlah (swt) , because the soul of a person who does not fear ALlah (swt) will constantly be drawn towards doing things which ALlah (swt) does not approve and being neglectful and indifferent towards those things which ALlah (swt) desires of us. It is for this reason that the only way to gain ALlah's approval is through fear of Him.

This order of things is established by ALlah (swt). Hence, to imagine that one will earn His love and approval before one has acquired fear of Him is a sign of great self-deception. Before all else, ALlah (swt) has ordered people to fear Him. To overlook this imperative and to say that one only needs to love ALlah (swt)
make no sense. People who assert that they love ALlah (swt) whilst they remain indifferent to what may be displeasing to Him are , in reality, deceiving themselves in their attempts to ease their own consciences. The love of ALlah (swt) they refer to is a figment of their imagination and is superficial in nature. People who truly love ALlah (swt) are extremely meticulous and decisive when it comes to the matter of adhering to His commands and prohibitions. Arguing that fear of ALlah (swt) is unnecessary is in fact no different from saying, "there is no need for fasting, prayer and worship." Such people resorts to a variety of excuses not only on the matter of fearing ALlah (swt) but also in order avoid fulfilling many of ALlah's other commands.

They know that ALlah (swt) could respond even on Earth

The Qur'an is full of references to ALlah (swt) punishing some people as a result of the sins they have committed on Earth. Despite ALlah's providing them with ample opportunities to avoid it, those who have persisted in their denial of belief have suffered the consequences of ALlah's response whilst still on Earth for what they have done and have remained as prime examples for other people.

A prime example of this is the story of Qarun, who was given great wealth by ALlah (swt). As a result of this vast wealth he became arrogant and developed as exaggerated sense of his own self-importance. People were initially convinced of Qarun's great power and were in total admiration of him, however, later on, when he met his demise as a result of his fierce pride, they finally understood the truth. In a totally unexpected and unprecedented manner, Qarun was destroyed as a direct result of his rebelliousness, and made a clesar object lesson for all mankind to learn:

'He went out among his people in his finery. Those who desired the life of this world said, "Oh! If only we had the same as Qarun has been given! What immense good fortune he possesses." [Surat al-Qasas: 79]

'We caused the Earth to swallow up both him and his house. There was no group to come to his aid, besides ALlah, and he was not someone who is helped. Those who had longed to take his place the day before woke up saying "ALlah expands the provision of any of His servants He wills or restricts it. If ALlah had not shown great kindness to us, we would have been swallowed up as well. Ah! Truly the unbelievers are nor successful." [Surat al-Qasas: 81-82]

The story of Qarun and other accounts in the Qur'an of many a magnificent and powerful community that have been unable to protect themselves from ALlah's punishment draw particular attention to the fact that ALlah (swt) has punished them here on Earth. This reality is explained  in many Qu'ranic verses:

'Have they not travelled in the Earth and  seen the final fate of those before them? They had greater strength than them and cultivated the land and inhabited  it in far greater numbers than they do...[Surat ar-Rum: 9]

...Did he not know that before him ALlah had destroyed generations with far greater strength than his and far more possessions?... [Surat al-Qasas: 78]

'How many generation We have destroyed before them who had finer furnishings and a better outward show! [Surat Maryam: 74]

The thing that distinguishes a true believer from other people is their consciousness of all these issues, they fear ALlah swt with inner awe and behave cautiously. When they make a mistake or even commit wrong action, they are aware that ALlah swt could respond immediately and so they turn to Him in a state of remorse and repentance, begging Him for forgiveness.
A true believer is very fearful of ALlah swt but at the same time puts his trust in ALlah's infinite mercy. This sensibility comes purely as a result of reflecting on the Hereafter.
In the Qur'an ALlah swt makes mention of those people who have quite the opposite attitude. Even though the coming punishment is plain to see, they fail to connect it to the reality of their own predicament and persist in their wrongful conduct. Their situation is described in the Qur'an as follows:

'When they saw it as a storm cloud advancing on their valleys they said, "This is a storm cloud which  will give us rain." No, rather it is what you desired to hasten - a wind containing painful punishment, destroying everything at its Lord's command! When morning came you could see nothing but their dwellings. That is how We repay the people of the evildoers.' [Surat al-Ahqaf: 24-25]

In conclusion when we look at the Qur'an we see that bad deeds, as long as the one who commits them doesn't repent and cease immediately as is due to ALlah's exalted justice, do not go unpunished. However, this punishment sometimes reaches people here on Earth, and sometimes is revealed on the Day of Reckoning. Those who show ingratitude and persist in what they do, are never safe from the punishment that ALlah swt is able to inflict upon them within an instant. This reality is described as follows in the Qur'an:

'Do you feel secure against Him causing the shore to swallow you up or sending against you a sudden squall of stones? Then you will find no one to be your guardian. Or do you feel secure against Him taking you back into it another time and sending a violent storm against you and drowning you for your ingratitude?  Then you will find no one to defend you against Us.' [Suart al-Isra': 68-69]

Prophet Muhammad (saws) expresses ALlah's exalted justice as follows:

"By Him in Whose hand my soul is, you must enjoin what is reputable and forbid what is disreputable, or ALlah will certainly soon send punishment from Himself to you. Then you will make supplication and not receive an answer." (Tirmidhi)

People cannot live their entire lives irresponsibly, because they are accountable to ALlah saw. To go against this would be to incur the severity of ALlah's punishment. To persist consciously with such behavior is clear evidence of failure to appreciate the totality of ALlah's power. If ALlah saw willed, He could at any moment withdraw all of the blessings He has bestowed upon mankind. This is referred to in  the Qur'anic verses cited below:

'If We wished, We could put out their eyes. Then, though they might race for the path, how would they see?
If We wished, We could transform them where they stand so they would neither be able to go out nor return' [Surah Ya-Sin: 66-67]

The reality is that everything a person owns, every breath he takes, every second of his life he owes to ALlah swt, and because true believers are aware of these realities they are constantly mindful of exceeding ALlah's limits.

They fear being caught ill-prepared for death

Death is a reality. On average, a person will remain on Earth for approximately sixty years following which the eternal life commences. This external life will be lived either in  the Garden (Paradise) endowed with endless blessings, or in the Fire (Hell), which has been created especially to inflict pain on body and soul. Whenever ALlah swt  wills, He can end a person's life on Earth and move him to the Hereafter and there is no doubt that this decision can become a reality within a blink of an eye.

A person can never know when he will die, the time his trial will end or the moment of his final judgment. As a result he should be quite fearful and cautious about being caught out unprepared when that moment arrives, being unable to account for his actions and being burdened with obligations that he has either neglected or postponed and not taken seriously. When thew angles of death arrive there is no further possibility to complete unfinished obligations or to compensate for work that should have been completed. The deeds done up to that moment will either be to one's profit or loss and one will be called to account and held responsible for them or rewarded for them, as the case may be.

Death is a reality from which there is no return. Every person is allowed to "live long enough fro anyone who was going to pay heed to pay heed" [Surah Fatir: 37]. When the appointed time of death arrives, no matter how much a person begs and pleads he will not be given another chance. No additional time will be granted him to fulfil the responsibilities towards ALlah saw that he had not fulfilled up to that time. To prevent true believers from becoming heedless and negligent ALlah saw has cautioned them:

'Give from what We have provided for you before death comes to one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only you would give me a little more time so that I can give charity and be one of the righteous!" ALlah will not give anyone more time, one their time has come. ALlah is aware of what you do.' [Surat al-Munafiqun: 10-11]

People should never be satisfied with themselves and what they have done insofar as they remain conscious of death becoming a reality at any moment and being caught ill-prepared for an end that has no return. One should spend every moment striving to protect ALlah's limits.

They fear the Day of Judgment

The fear of ALlah saw and the Day of Judgment nurtured by those possessing faith is described in the following Qur'anic verse:

'Those who fear their Lord in the Unseen and are  apprehensive about the Hour [Surat al-Anbiya': 49]

In addition, in another Qur'anic verse ALlah saw makes mentioned of the inner fear of the believers:

'In houses which ALlah has permitted to be built and in which His name is remembered, there are men who proclaim His glory morning and  evening, not distracted by trade or commerce from the remembrance of ALlah and the performance of prayer and the giving of alms; fearing a day when all hearts and eyes will be in turmoil.' [Surat an-Nur: 36-37]

For both the people who have remained far removed  from fearing ALlah swt throughout their lives, and  those who believed and have behaved cautiously, their earthly actions will be  shown to them one by one. Furthermore, without omitting even the slightest detail, on that day those who have lived an irresponsible life without fearing ALlah saw and without acting cautiously will understand what they are destined for:

'That Day people will emerge segregated to see the results of their actions. Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it. Whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.' [Surat az-Zilzal: 6-8]

As a result of their fear and remorse, they will want to die and cease to exist. Their ruinous existence is described in  the following verses of Qur'an:

'But as for him who is given his Book in his left hand, he will say, "If only I had not been given my Book and had not known about my Reckoning! If only death had really been the end!  My wealth has been of no use to me. My power has vanished." [Surat al-Haqqa: 25-29]

But as for him who is given his Book behind his back, he will cry out for destruction but will be roasted in a Searing Blaze. He used to be joyful in his family. He thought that he was never going to return. But in fact his Lord was always watching him! [Surat al-Inshiqaq: 10-15]

Following this, the deeds contained in the individual records will be weighed on sensitive scales, which ALlah swt has prepared for the Day of Judgment. Not an atom's weight of injustice will be done. If one is not amongst the cautious, one's scales will be light and one will be apprehended, chained and sent to the place one deserves. Not only will nobody help each other, one will not even be able to help oneself.  The pain of one's helplessness will engulf one's entire being:

'But as for him whose balance is light, his motherland is Hawiya. And what will convey to you what that is? A raging Fire! [Surat al-Qari'a: 8-11}

On that day, people who lead their lives on Earth without fear of ALlah swt will have all their sins laid before them one at a time. Not only the deeds committed but also all the evil deeds that they may have intended. When that time comes they will not be able to do anything about the remorse they will experience Even their attempts at denial will fail since their hearing, sight and skin will begin to speak in evidence against them as decreed by ALlah:

It may be that those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims. [Surat al-Hijr: 2]

The fear that true believers feel ensures that they continue to behave cautiously and  conscientiously, being fully aware that ALlah's verse will be manifested on that day. It is for this reason that so long as one  remains on the Earth one must be wary of involvement in anything that one cannot give an acceptable account for. In fact, it is inconceivable that a person possessing a sound intellect could act contrary to this. ALlah's knowledge is everywhere and envelops and penetrates everything. He is closer to a person than his own jugular vein, whilst specially assigned angles record everything without  missing the slightest detail. For a person to be preoccupied with the worthless and transitional affairs of this world at the expense  of forgetting the Day of Judgment is the greatest heedlessness possible.

From the moment we open our eyes in then morning it means that ALlah swt has created a new day and another chance for us. We should be mindful of the moment when we will be accountable to ALlah swt, and start the day with sincere intentions. Our intention however, should be  to distance ourselves from behavior and  actions which ALlah swt does not approve of . No one would like to find himself amongst those who when the moment arrives will be apprehended and sent to an endless punishment crying, "If only..." and "How I wish...."

'Mankind! Fear your Lord and fear a day when no father will be able to atone for his son, or son for his father, in any way. ALlah's promise is true. So do not let the life of this world delude you and do not let the Deluder delude you concentrating ALlah.' [Surah Luqman: 33]

THE CARD OUTWEIGHTED NINETY-NINE RECORDS
from
STORIES OF THE UNSEEN IN AUTHENTIC TRADITIONS
Prof Dr Umar S.Al-Ashqar

Introduction

This tradition relates the story of a person who was heavily burdened by sins and bad deeds that filled up ninety-nine records, each of which extended as far as the eye can see. However ALlah (swt) will show him a small card that outweighs all of those records of bad deeds.

Text of the Hadith

Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (r.a) narrated that he heard the Messenger of ALlah (swt) saying, " A person from my ummah will be summoned in the presence of all creatures in the Day of Judgment. Ninety-nine records of his deeds will be unfolded, each extending as far as the eye can see. Then he will asked. 'Do you deny any of these deeds? Have my record writers done you any injustice?' He will reply, 'No, my Lord.' He will be asked, 'Do you have any excuse or any good deeds?'  The man will say, 'No, my Lord.' It will be said to him, "Yes. You have some good deeds. No inequity will befall you. A card will then be shown to him and on it will be written, "La ilaha illa ALlah, Muhammadun Rasulu ALlah." (There is no god but ALlah and Muhammad is His Messenger.)  The man will be asked to attend the weighting process. He will say, 'O' ALlah! What will this card do compared with these records?'  It will be said to him, 'No injustice will befall you.'  The ninety-nine records will then be placed in one side of the scale and the card in the other. The card will then outweigh the records because nothing can outweigh the Name of ALlah."

Explanation of the Hadith

This is a person for whom the honorable angles, the recorders of deeds, have filled out ninety-nine records with his bad deeds, each of which extends as far as the eye can see. ALlah (swt) will show him his records and ask him, "Do you deny any of these records? Have my record writes done you any injustice to you?" He will answer, "No, my Lord." Then, he will be asked if he had any excuses, but he will find nothing. Thus, he will believe that he is definitely going to be sent to Hell.

At that moment, it will be said to him, "Yes. You have some good deeds. No inequity will befall you." A card will then be shown to him in which he testified that there is no god but ALlah, and Muhammad is His Messenger. He will be asked to attend the weighing process.

Ninety-nine records of bad deeds, each of which extends as far as vision can see will be weighted against a small card on which Shahadatan (testifying that there is no god but ALlah and Muhammad is the Messenger of ALlah) is written. This man would say to the Lord of Honor, "O' my lord! This card against all of the records?!" It will be said to him, "No inequity will be befall you." The surprise will be incredible when the  small card outweighs the ninety-nine records. This agrees with what the Messenger of ALlah (swt) said, "Nothing can outweigh the Name of ALlah."

Morals of the Story

1. The story indicates that the Muslim's declaration of belief in the Oneness of God and acceptance as His Prophet will be rewarded by ALlah (swt) as it happened with the man in the story.

2. The honorable writers of deeds record both good and evil deeds which will be collected in one book. Nothing of one's deeds whether small or big will be forgotten.

3. The recods of good deeds will be placed on one side of the scale and those of the bad deeds in the other,
'Then, those whose scales {of good deeds) are heavy, they are the successful. And those whose scales (of good deeds) are light, they are those who lose their ownselves, in Hell will they abide.' [Qur'an Surah Al-Mu'minun : 102-103]

4. The scale in which human beings' deeds are weighted has two sides.

5. Weighing people's deeds is done in the presence of all people, publicly, and whoever is saved will not be disgraced on the Day of Judgment.
IS THE QUR'AN GOD'S WORD?
Dr Zakir Naik

HOW CAN YOU PROVE THAT THE QUR'AN IS THE WORD OF GOD?

Islam is not the name of some unique religion presented for the first time by Prophet Muhammad (saw) who should, on that account be called the founder of Islam.

The Qur'an states that Islam - the complete submission of man before his one and only Unique Creator - is the one and only faith and way of life consistently revealed by God to humankind from the very beginning. Noah, Solomon, David, Abraham, Moses,  Isaac and Jesus - prophets who appeared at different times and places - all propagated the same faith and conveyed the same message of  Tawheed (Oneness of God), Risaalat (Prophethood) and Aakhirah (the Hereafter). These prophets of God were not founders of different religions to be named after them. They were each reiterating the message and faith of their predecessors.

However, Muhammad (saw) was the last Prophet of God. God revived through him the same genuine faith which has been conveyed by all His Prophets. This original message was earlier corrupted and split into various religions by people of different ages, who indulged in interpolation and admixture, These alien elements were eliminated by God, and Islam - in its pure and original form - was transmitted to humankind through prophet Muhammad (saw). Since there was to be no messenger after Muhammad (saw), the Book revealed to him (i.e the Qur'an) was preserved word for word so that it should be a source of guidance for all times.

The miracle of Prophet Muhammad (saw), i.e. the Qur'an, is for all times. All the previous Prophets of God were sent only to their people and their nation and  their complete message was meant for a particular time period. Therefore the miracles they performed such as parting of  sea by Prophet Moses (pbuh), giving life to dead by Prophet Jesus (pbuh), etc. convinced the people of that time but these miracles cannot be analyzed and verified by us today.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) is the last and final Messenger of God, sent for the whole of humankind and the message he delivered is for eternity. The Qur'an says:

"We sent (Prophet Muhammad) not but as a mercy for all creatures?" [Surah Al-'Anbya': 107]

Therefore the miracles of the last and final Messenger should also be everlasting, examinable and verifiable by people of all ages, after its revelation. Though Prophet Muhammad (saw) performed several miracles as mentioned in the Hadith (recorded traditions, sayings and actions of the Prophet), he never emphasized them. Though we Muslims believe in these miracles we only boast of the ultimate miracle given to him by Almighty God, which is the Qur'an.

Al-Qur'an is the miracle of all times which proved itself to be a miracle 1400 years ago and which can be reconfirmed today and forever. In short, it is the Miracle of Miracles.

Many people have a misconception that Prophet Muhammad (saw) is the founder of the religion of Islam. However, Islam is in existence since the first man (Prophet Adam) first set foot on earth. Since then, Almighty God sent several prophets and revelations, the last in this chain being Prophet Muhammad (saw) and the Qur'an.

Three options regarding authorship of the Qur'an

Probably, the only point of agreement amongst those who have the slightest knowledge of the Qur'an irrespective of whether they are Muslims or not., is that the Qur'an was recited for the first time by a man who was born in Makkah in Arabia in the 6th century (C.E) by the name of Muhammad (saw). Regarding the sources of the Qur'an there can be four basic assumptions for a non-Muslim;
- Prophet Muhammad (saw) himself was the author of the Qur'an; consciously, sub-consciously or unconsciously.
- Prophet Muhammad (saw) learnt  it from other human sources or copied or adopted from the previous scriptures or revelations.
- Qur'an has no human author but it is a word for word revelation from God.
- Prophet Muhammad (saw) was not the author of the Qur'an.

1)  Muhammad (saw) never claimed the authorship of the Qur'an

It is highly abnormal to challenge the testimony of someone who disclaims responsibility for producing a great work, whether literary, scientific or other. Yet this is precisely what orientalists and others, who are suspicious about the origins of the Qur'an, do when they claim that Prophet Muhammad (saw) was the author of the Glorious Qur'an.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) never ever claimed responsibility for originating it. He honestly said that it was ALlah (swt) who revealed this scripture to him. To think otherwise is illogical because it would mean that he was telling a lie.

From history we learn that between his youth and the prophetic mission that commenced at the age of 40, he had never been known to lie. He was so well known for his truthfulness, honesty and chastity that he was given the title "Al-Ameen" i.e. "The trust worthy" by friends and foes alike. Then why should he lie at the age of 40 while claiming to be a messenger of God?

It is interesting to note however, that although many of the Meccan Pagans rejected Islam and regarded the Prophet as a liar, they nevertheless trusted him and deposited their valuables with him for safe-keeping. This is apparent from the fact that when the Prophet decided to leave Makkah to foil an assassination attempt on him, he left the valuables with Hazrat Ali (r.a) to distribute it to the rightful owners.

One when Abu Sufiyan, one of the pagan chiefs of Makkah, went to Emperor Heraclius to ask for his support against the Prophet, on being questioned whether the Prophet had been accused of lying, prior his claim to be a Prophet or whether he had betrayed his trust, Abu Sufiyan the arch enemy of the Prophet had to answer "No". Thus even his opponents acknowledged his sincerity, truthfulness and honesty.

What logical reason can a person think of, for Prophet Muhammad (saw) to lie while stating he was a Prophet and not the author of the Qur'an? In the previous article, we analyzed and discussed the probability of Prophet Muhammad (saw) being the author of the Qur'an based on whether he claimed to be its author. Let us now analyze some more probabilities given by skeptics of why Prophet Muhammad (saw) could have written such a book without claiming its authorship.

2) Material gain as the motive

Same may argue that Muhammad (saw) falsely attributed the Qur'an to God and called himself a Prophet for material gain. I do agree that there are several people who falsely claim to be prophets, saints and preachers for material benefits and thus become rich and lead luxurious lives.

Muhammad (saw) financial position was better off than after the  announcement of his Prophethood. At the age of 25, he married Khadija (r.a), who was a very rich and wealthy businesswoman, 15 years before he claimed Prophethood. His financial position and life standard after claiming Prophethood was unenviable.

One of the wives of the Prophet (saw), Ayesha (r.a) narrates that a month or two would go by without fire being lit in their house because there was nothing to cook. They survived on dates and water.Sometimes this diet was supplemented with goat's milk from the people of Madinah. (According to Riyad-As-Saliheen by An-Nawawi, Hadith no 492)

This was not just a temporary sacrifice but a way if life. This was at a time when Muhammad (saw) could have lived like a king, if he so wanted. There was a sort of discontent and protest by those close to him as to why should they live in poor condition when they could avail of all luxuries. The Prophet was disturbed with their discontent and a revelation came commending him to tell his wives:

'O' Prophet! Say to your Consorts: "If it be that you desire the life of this world and its glitter then come, I will provide for your enjoyment and set you free in a handsome manner. But if you seek ALlah and His Messenger and the Home of the Hereafter verily ALlah has prepared for the well-doers amongst you a great reward." [Surah Al-'Ahzab: 28-29]

This evidence is also recorded in Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim.

Abu Zarr (r.a) and Abu Hurairah (r.a), the companions of the Prophet (saw) never kept back any gifts and provisions secured for future use, but spent what he had on the poor and needy. (According to Riyad-As-Saleheen, Hadith no. 465 and 466).

In spite of victories and achievements of Prophet Muhammad 9saw), at the time of his death, he was in debt, and his shield was in the hands of a Jewish citizen of Madinah as a collateral for his debt. (According to Riyad-As-Saleheen, Hadithg no. 504)

If Prophet Muhammad (saw) would have actually been the author of the Qur'an and  would have lied for material gains, that it is a book of God, he would have never mentioned in the same Qur'an:

"Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say: 'This is from ALlah' to traffic with it for a miserable price! Woe to them for what their hands do write and for the gain they make thereby."
[Surah Al-Baqarah: 79]

This verse rebukes those persons who changed the previous Revealed scriptures, or authored books with their own minds and said, "this is from God" for their personal material benefit. If Prophet Muhammad (saw) had himself written the Qur'an, there were chances that at some point of time he would have been exposed, be considered the biggest hypocrite (God forbid), and would be cursing himself in his own book, which is illogical.

3)  Desire for status, power, glory and leadership

Is it possible that Muhammad (saw) might have claimed Prophethood in order to attain Status, Power, Glory and Leadership?

Muhammad (saw) has universally been acknowledged as one of the most successful leaders in human history. A Christian scholar Michael H.Hart has given a list of what he considers the hundred most influential men in the history, from Adam to the present time, along with a list of reasons for his ranking. In his book 'The 100 - a ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History'. This unbiased Christian scholar placed Prophet Muhammad (saw) on top of the list. He concluded the biography with the words,

"It is this unparalleled combination of secular and religious influence which I feel entitles Muhammad (saw) to be considered the most influential single figure in human history".

A man with qualities could claim leadership and assume power even within claiming Prophethood. Moreover, his character suggests that he was neither a power monger, nor a glory seeker. The desire to enjoy status and power monger, nor a glory seeker. The desire to enjoy status and power is usually associated with good food, fancy clothing, magnificent places, monumental palaces colourful guards and indisputable authority.
Despite his social standing as a Prophet and heavy responsibility as a statesman, Muhammad (saw) used to milk his goat, mend his clothes, repair his shoes and help with the household work. His life was an amazing example of simplicity and  humility. He sat on the floor. He went to the market to shop with no guards or provisions and accepted invitations to dine with the poor and ate graciously whatever was served.

He talked and listened patiently to anyone who approached him. So much so that the Qur'an says that his detractors complained saying:

"O! He listens to everyone."  [Surah At-Tawbah: 61]

Once a representative of pagans named Utbah came to the Prophet (saw) and said that if he gave up preaching he message of the Qur"an, they will make him the wealthiest man in the community and their leader with absolute power or even crown him as a king, if he wanted. The only concession they wanted from Muhammad (saw) was a seeker after power, glory and wealth, he would not have missed this golden opportunity. However he rejected the proposal using the verses that were revealed to him from ALlah in Al-Qur'an 41 Fussilat  : 1-38

Later another approach was made to the Prophet (saw) from delegation of the pagan nobles. The Prophet (saw) refused to compromise on the divinely inspired message which he had been sent with to deliver saying:

"I did not bring this message on my own, nor in pursuit of your money or respect or leadership. God has sent me as messenger to you and has given me a book, the Qur'an..."

On another occasion, they tried to persuade him through his beloved uncle Abu Talib to accept worldly power and prestige in return for giving up his Prophetic Mission. He said,

"Oh! My uncle, if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand, in order that I should give up this mission of mine, I will never do it until I die in defence of this truth, or God decides whatever He Pleases."

The death of Muhammad (saw) most beloved son Ibrahim (r.a) coincided with the eclipse of the sun and people regarded it as a miracle form God that heaven and earth were mourning at the death of Ibrahim. Muhammad (saw) was very angry with them and said:

"The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of someone but they are two signs amongst the signs of ALlah."   [Sahih Bukhari vol. 2, Hadith No 152]

Are these the characteristics of a power-hungry or a self-centered man? What could justify such a life of suffering and sacrifice, even after he was fully triumphant over over his adversaries? What could explain the humbleness and nobility, which he demonstrated in his most glorious moments when he insisted that success is only due to God's help and not due to his own genius?

MISCONCEPTION : THERE IS NO LIFE AFTER DEATH
Dr Noorul Hussain K, M.D. (A.M.)

When no reasonable man can do anything without any purpose, how can we expect that without any purpose, the All-Wise, All-knowing Creator has created us and provided us with all those things that are necessary for our survival and  growth?  ALlah (swt) says:

1)  "Did you then think that We have created you in vain and that you would not be brought back to Us (for account)?"  [Surah Al-Mu'minun: 115]

2)  "We have not created heaven and earth and all that lies between them in vain. That is the fancy of the  unbelievers. Woe to the unbelievers by the fire." [Surah Sad: 27]

If ALlah (swt) has not created anything in vain, why has He then created all things?  The Holy Qur'aan says:

1)  "He has created all things that are on earth for you (i.e. for man).
[Surah Al-Baqarah:  29]
2)  "I have created jinns and men, so that they might worship Me."
[Surah Adh-Dhariyat: 56]

ALlah has created  all things that are on earth for our benefit, and created us for His worship. So, to inform man the purpose of his life and to teach the modes and types of worship, ALlah (swt) sent His Messengers and conveyed  His Religion Islam to mankind. Now the following questions arise:

1)  What will man get if he worships ALlah (swt) as per His Guidance?
2)  What will man lose if he does not worship ALlah (swt)?

These questions themselves demand the Day of Judgment. ALlah (swt) created man and provided all that man needs to survive and grow. So He is our Master and we are His slaves. And he , the Master, asked His slaves to worship Him alone. It is ridiculous to tthink that the Master will not ask His slave anything about the work given and about the things  He has provided for His slave for accomplishing the work. Moreover, it is against wisdom and justice that if the Master does not give any reward to the slave who completes the work given. It is also against wisdom and justice if the Master does not punish the slave who does not care for the work given by his Master. So, wisdom and justice demand the Day of reward for the obedient slaves and the Day of punishment for the disobedient and wicked slaves. So, to reward His obedient slaves and to punish His disobedient and  wicked slaves, ALlah (swt) has appointed a Day that is known as the Day of Recompense (Yaumudeen).  ALlah (swt) says:

1)  "The blind and the one who sees (clearly), are not equal, nor are those who believe and work righteous   deeds and those who do evil equal. You learn a little by admonition! The Hour will certainly come therein  is no doubt. Yet most people do not believe." [Surah Ghafir: 58-59]

2)  "What! Do those who do evil deeds think  that We will make them as equal with those who believe and    do righteous deed... The judgment that they make is ill. ALlah (swt) created the heavens and the earth on     (the basis of) Truth, and in order that each soul may find the recompense of what it has earned, and none     of them shall be wronged." [Surah Al-Jathiyah: 21-22]

3)  "If anyone does a righteous deed, it is for his own benefit; if he does evil, it works against (his own soul).   In the end you (all) will be brought back to your Lord (for account)." [Surah Al-Jathiyah: 15]

4)  "Is then the man who has Faith like the man who is rebellious and wicked?  They are not equal. For      those who have Faith and do righteous deeds are gardens as hospitable homes for their (good) deeds. As to those who are rebellious and wicked, their abode will be the fire. Every time they wish to get away, they will be forced back, and it will be said to them: 'Taste you the chastisement of the fire, which you were wont to reject as false," [Surah As-Sajdah: 18-20]

5)  "The sinners will be in the punishment of the hell, to dwell therein (for aye). It (the punishment) will not be  lightened for them, and they will be overwhelmed in that. We will not be unjust to them. But it is they who have been unjust to themselves." [Surah Az-Zukhruf: 74-76]
Abdullah Yusuf 'Ali says in the commentary of these Verses: "The wrong-doers suffer not because     ALlah (swt) is unjust and cruel, nor as a deterrent to others, for the probationary period will then have     passed, because their evil deeds must bear their inevitable fruit. ALlah's Grace was ever ready to offer     opportunities for repentance and forgiveness. But they rejected them. They were unjust to themselves."

6)  "And indeed We will make them taste of the lighter chastisement (in  this world) before the greater chastisement (in Hereafter) in order that they may (repent and) return." [Surah As-Sajdah: 21]

7)   "If any does good, the reward to him is better than his deed; but if any does evil, the doers of evil are only punished (to the extent) of their deeds," [Surah Al-Qasas: 84]

8)  "Truly he succeeds that purifies it (his soul), and he fails that corrupts it." [Surah Ash-Shams: 9-10]

Therefore, every person has to lead this life, keeping Hereafter in consideration. Death is the reality of life. So man should always remember the death and the Hereafter. This makes him a responsible, realistic and practical person, and enables him to discharge the responsibilities towards the God, and towards the parents, the family, the relatives , the  neighbours, the society etc.

THE PURPOSE OF DEATH AND LIFE
by Abu Jamal
Understand Qur'an Academy

Word Origins

The word tabaraka is the superlative form of barkat, which captures numerous meanings in the English language : exaltation and greatness, abundance and sufficiency, eternalness and diversity of virtues and distinctions. When the superlative, tabaraka is reflected, it conveys the meaning that ALlah (swt) is infinitely superior to all things except Himself in terms of his essence, attributes and abilities, and the His qualities are ever-enduring.  Because the word al-Mulk is used definitively rather than in a limited application, it conveys the concept of absolute sovereignty over the universe in its entirety, and He possesses unconditional supremacy of command, which is shared with no one else, nor can anyone else prevent His exercise of command.

Free Will - a Test

By being given limited free will, mankind is empowered to do good or evil. His life is not purposeless, and the purpose of his life is to test what category of individual he is. Since ALlah (swt) has structured the test, and since He is Supreme in Command, He will determine the results of the test. Therefore, it is  the responsibility of mankind to understand the standards for good and evil as established by ALlah (swt).
And ALlah (swt) is absolutely FAIR. He sends His Books and His Messengers to convey these standards to mankind.

ALlah (swt) conveys the thought at numerous times in the Holy Qur'an that the best of deeds are those that are performed for the sake of ALlah (swt) and in the manner announced by the Prophet Muhammad (saws).
The test that ALlah (swt) conducts begins when life is granted and ends when death occurs. A test implies accountability, without which a test is meaningless.  By stating the He is "All-Mighty, Oft-Forgiving", ALlah (swt) conveys that He will apply the reward or the punishment, and that He is the One "in Whose Hand is the dominion;"  He conveys that this reward or punishment will occur in both this life and the afterlife.

The Thing Were Made For

Being created to undergo a test demonstrates the real position of mankind in relation to the world, as well as the relation of the world to mankind.  It distinguishes mankind from all other objects of creation (animals and vegetable matter), whose purpose in life ends with their death or completion of usefulness. An individual's age is a measure of the time that he or she has been given to participate in the test. Whatever powers and abilities the individual has been granted, the people, places , and things that have been positioned under the individual's authority, the numerous positions in which the individual functions are measures of the test, which continues until death occurs. It is in the afterlife, when all individuals are read their records, that the result of the test is announced : Jinnah or Jahannam. And the individual's reward or punishment will be based on the category of individual that he or she establishes though their deeds.

Profession of Faith Not Enough

Do people think that they will be left alone because they say : "We believe, " and will not be tested?
[Surah Al-Ankabut, Ayah 2]

Just to profess faith is not sufficient. It must be tried and tested in real life situations. The tests will take place under a variety of circumstances in the individual's personal life as well as in her or his relationship to the environment. The individual will encounter sadness and disappointment, as well as suffering and must be prepared for self-sacrifice. Even the wrong that people may do to us is a part of the test.

We are here on this earth for a test. ALlah (swt) wants to make us reveal whether we would worship Him or not, whether we would serve Him or not. We have to remember and act upon the fact that every moment of our life is a test, an examination of the manner in which we fulfill the purpose of our existence. Our performance on this test is what will decide if our ultimate destiny is eternal torment or eternal peace and bliss.

Allah (swt) has granted us control over our intentions as part of the test that He has given us. ALlah (swt) is All-Knowing. He doesn't need the results of a test to increased His own knowledge. The test is for our use, our improvement, to burn out the impurities within ourselves, to mold our wills and to purify us. Our performance on the test is based on the relationship with Him that we choose to have. The first stage of the test is to see if you accept the Prophet Muhammad (saws). The second stage is to see if you live in accordance with the law he brought.

When Thing Go Wrong, it's Not a Punishment

The individual is tested with circumstances that are favorable to her or him, as well as situations that are unfavorable. It is a total misreading of the facts of life to consider that which is favorable an indication of the pleasure of ALlah (swt) or that which is unfavorable an indication of His displeasure. It is one's reaction to the test that pleases or displeases ALlah (swt). The test will determine whether or not we have patience and perseverance, whether we can endure through pain and sorrow, to wee if our relationship with Him can weather the storms, whether we turn to him in sincere supplication in times of hardship. Those who meet these criteria, accept and learn from the test are numbered among the true believers.

Those who don't learn and don't bother to do anything about the test but who maintain an air of achievement are candidates for hypocrisy. Those who don't accept the test, complain about its demands, and are not patient are candidates for disbelief.

THE ANSWER

To answer the question "Why did God create man?"  it must first be determined from which perspective the question is being asked. From the point of view of God it would mean, "What caused God to create human beings?"  While from the human point of view it would mean "For what purpose did God create humans?"
Both points of view represent aspects of the intriguing question "Why do I exist?"  Both aspects of the question will be explored based on the clear picture painted by divine revelation. This is not a topic for human speculation, because human guesswork cannot possibly produce the whole truth in this matter. How can human intellectually deduce the reality of their existence when they can hardly understand how their own brain or its higher entity, the mind, functions? Consequently, the many philosophers who have speculated on this question down through thew ages have come up with innumerable answers, all of which are based on assumptions which cannot be proven. Questions on  this topic have even led a number of philosophers to claim that we do not really exist and that the whole world is imaginary.  For example, the Greek philosopher Plato (428-348 BC) argued that the everyday world of changeable things, which man comes to know by the use of his senses, is not the primary reality, but is a shadow world of appearances. Many others, as was previously mentioned, claimed and continue to claim that there is no purpose for the creation of humans at all. According to them, Human existence is merely s product of chance. They can be no purpose if life evolved from inanimate matter which only became animate by pure luck. Humankind's supposed 'cousins,' the monkey and apes are not bothered with questions of existence, so why should human beings be bothered with them?

Although most people put the question of why we are created aside after occasional brief reflection, it is extremely critical for human beings to know the answer. Without knowledge of the correct answer, human beings become indistinguishable from the other animals around them.  The animal necessities and desires of eating, drinking and pro-creating become the purpose of human existence by default, and  human effort is then focused in this limited sphere.  When material satisfaction develops into the most important goal in life, human existence becomes even more degraded than that of the lowest of animals. Human beings will consistently misuse their God-given intelligence when they lack knowledge of their purpose of existence.
The degraded human mild uses its abilities to create drugs and bombs and becomes engrossed in fornication, pornography, homosexuality, fortune-telling, suicide, etc. Without knowledge of the purpose of life, human existence loses all meaning and is consequently wasted, and the reward of an eternal life of happiness in the hereafter is completely destroyed. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that human beings correctly answer the question "Why are we here?"

Humans most often turn to other human beings like themselves for the answers. However, the only place that clear and precise answers to these questions can be found is in the books of divine revelation. It was necessary that God reveal the purpose to man through His prophets, because human beings are incapable of arriving at the correct answers by themselves. All of the prophets of God taught their followers the answers to the question "Why did God create man?"
THE PURPOSE OF CREATION
Dr Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips

The purpose of creation is a topic that puzzles every human being at some point in his or her lifetime. Everybody, at some time or another , asks themselves the question "Why do I exit?" or "For what purpose am I here on earth?"

The variety and complexity of the intricate systems which constitute the fabric of both human beings and the world in which they exist indicate that there must have been a Supreme Being who created them. Design indicates a designer. When human beings come across footprints on a beach, they immediately conclude that a human being had walked by there some time previously. No one imagines that the waves from the sea settled in the sand and by chance produced a depression looking exactly like human footprints. Nor do humans instinctively  conclude that they were brought into existence without a purpose. Since purposeful action is a natural product of human intelligence, humans conclude that the Supreme Intelligent Being who created them must have done so for a specific purpose. Therefore, human beings need to know the purpose of their existence in order to make sense of this life and to do what is ultimately beneficial for them.

Throughout the ages, however, there has been a minority among humans who have denied the existence of God. Matter, in their opinion, is eternal and  mankind is merely a chance product of accidental combinations of its elements. Consequently, to them, the question "Why did God create man?" had and still has no answer. According to them, there simply is no purpose to existence. However, the vast majority of humankind over the ages have believed and continue to believe in the existence of a Supreme Being  who created this world with a purpose. For them it was, and still is, important to know about the Creator and the purpose for which He created human beings.
